House of Beasts and our 100th Post!

Welcome to our 100th Murgatroyd Hoots blog post! (You'll have to imagine the cloud of colourful balloons & streamers now raining down over your head in celebration...).
Refuge By Nina Saunders (taxidermy fox & upholstered chair)
Zzzzzzzzz. So life like it was hard not to pull his ears!

Today we'd like to share with you some work from the 'House of Beasts' exhibition at Attingham Park, Shropshire. We were lucky enough to go along to the opening of this fascinating exhibition earlier this week and were bowled over by the pieces on show. Much of the work has been made specifically for, and in response to, the history of the Attingham site.  As the title suggests, it has an animal theme, exploring the relationship between man and beast in close proximity.
  Dog By Des Hughes
You want to rub his nose until you realise he's been chewing a hand!

Vex by Kate MccGwire(mixed media with pigeon feathers in museum case)
A compelling piece of 'feathery'. Many of the feathers still bear the stamp of their pigeon fancier clubs
Chandelier By Nina Saunders (chandelier with taxidermy birds)

Sphere by Alastair Mackie (mouse skulls, wood, glass)
Has the look of delicate lace...

Primate by Daphne Wright (marbel dust, onyx, resin, paint, silk embroidery)
An incredible and poignant, life size piece of work onto which Wright has embroidered the creature's body hair in minute detail. Embroidery Magazine did an article on this work last year

If you do get the chance to visit Attingham you won't be disappointed. The house and grounds make the basis of a great day out. Exhibition continues until July 2012.
